drama section - the rise and fall of little voice

The Rise and fall of Little Voice is a superbly written black comedy by Jim Cartwright. Cartwright, it is reported, originally created the character of Little Voice for Jane Horrocks to showcase her extraordinary vocal talents and skillful impersonations.

Little Voice (LV) lives alone with her mother Mari, whose sole purpose in life is to find a man. When Mari's latest catch, Ray, overhears LV's impersonations of famous singers, (Judy Garland, Shirley Bassey, Marilyn Monroe to name a few), he rushes to exploit her talent, and the result destroys LV. You’ll have to come and see if poor LV can recover from the onslaught of his desire to produce a hit act. This Jim Cartwright comedy, in turn savage and sentimental, was originally presented at the National and Aldwych Theatres with Jane Horrocks, Alison Steadman and Pete Postlethwaite in the starring roles.

The Rise and Fall of Little Voice was presented at

The Sallis Benney theatre, University of Brighton
